Update Y2K7: Let’s Get Internetin’
Well, well, well, it’s 2007 and there still hasn’t been a major catastrophe on new years. I’m really disappointed.
But not as disappointed as I am with my Nintendo Wii. I played Zelda until I got my fill of “Zelda gameplay”. The game is the same as any other Zelda title except you have to use wrist jerks instead of buttons and sometimes you get to point at the screen. Big woop.
So I played Wii Bowling until I was pro.
Now I know there are other games for the Nintendo Wii but do you really think any of them offer anything with any depth? I need a story that inspires me like Final Fantasy 7 or fast-paced action as addicting as Quake, Counter-Strike or Gears of War. I need the beautiful wow-factor Windwaker. I need a game like an MMORPG that can capture my attention for hours at a time, not minutes. Zelda was a great title to really draw in hardcore nintendo fans. Wii Sports did it for the uninitiated. What do us hardcore gamers get in the Wii? Not much.
World of Warcraft is kind of fizzling too. I know the expansion is due out and I pre-ordered it but until then I’ve grinded on honor all I can take. I’ve got flaming shoulder pads and a high warlords razor to show for it. Honestly, I can only play so much battlegrounds before I need to see results and progress. The new gear is nice, but it doesn’t seem to be making me any more powerful. I can’t wait to make a new character Jan 16th though and I’m sure I’ll be back for a short while if, by then, EVE hasn’t taken me completely.
In my desperation for complexity and rewards not supplied by my Wii or World of Warcraft I decided to start a character in EVE Online. This game does not only have a learning curve, it has a learning cliff. It is the opposite of World of Warcraft and I really like that. Not only do I enjoy it’s complexity but it appears to have successfully repelled the hoards of idiots commonly found in Orgrimmar general chat.
Today’s news round up: According to a report from UK-based research firm Datamonitor, by 2010 the PS3 is supposed to be the dominate console. I think the Xbox 360 has already defeated the PS3. Those on Nexgen Wars think the Wii will be victorious with (currently) 53% choosing Wii, 29% 360 and 17% PS3. For those of you who enjoy playing games now instead of later, I suggest you get a 360 because it’s market share is over twice the share of Wii and PS3 combined. TechSpot has a great article on building a Core 2 Duo system for under $1000. It’s really a nice rig. Game Developers Choice Awards are open for nominations by IGDA members.
